55 Years of IT at Škoda Auto
Exactly 55 years ago, in the autumn of 1969, the first IBM 360/30 computers arrived in Mladá Boleslav — marking the beginning of Škoda Auto’s IT journey. The company’s first IT department opened the door to modernization that continues to this day. Today, Škoda Auto’s IT plays a crucial role in designing vehicles using the latest technologies, pushing the boundaries of the automotive industry. At Green:Code, we’re proud to be part of this evolution and to contribute to the future of automotive innovation.
To celebrate this important milestone, we were invited to the IT Gala Evening, where our CEO Marian Pavlík represented Green:Code. The event featured an interactive theatre performance Splašené nůžky (Shear Madness), which perfectly concluded the evening. Thank you once again for a wonderful event full of inspiration, creativity, and fun. It reminded us how essential constant innovation in IT is — and how far technology has come over the past half-century.
A few key milestones:
- The first computer at Škoda Auto was the IBM 360/30, introduced in 1969.
- Today, the IT department employs over 700 people and manages 1,500 applications for 30,000 employees.
- The Octavia model from the 1990s was the first to be largely designed on a computer.
- In 1982, Škoda Auto introduced its first computer networks, enabling more efficient data sharing across departments.
